The design of this building was initiated through a master planning process focused on creating an attractive, imaginative and stimulating learning environment.

After completing the Wilmington Waterfront Master Plan, Sasaki identified three open spaces for implementation: the Wilmington Waterfront Park, the Avalon North Streetscape, and the Avalon South Waterfront Park.

The park would function as an exhibition for the mining memorials and as a natural recreational area.

In attractive climates these external transition spaces, often finished in simple timbers, collect activity at the building edge where physical and visual access to landscape is unrestricted, immediate and inviting. Without enclosing walls, a verandah forms a single space held between horizontal flooring and roofing planes, and orientated outwards to the surrounding landscape by the building behind and transverse access

Manhattan Mountain: Re-Imagining SPURA on the Lower East Side / Ju-Hyun Kim

Courtesy of Ju-Hyun Kim Manhattan Mountain, by Ju-Hyun Kim , is a design speculation over five of the most debated plots of vacant land in New York City. Collectively known as SPURA , the Seward Park Urban Renewal Area, the five parking lots on the Lower East Side, just South of Delancey Street near the Williamsburg Bridge, were once the site of tenement housing until they were acquired by the Urban Renewal Plan in 1965 and demolished. Since then, the other lots that suffered a simular fate and have been developed into various iterations of low-income and mixed-use housing developments.

The esthetic of the house celebrates the summer with modern curves that remind us of the Brazilian architecture of the sixties. © Elsa Ramirez The whole house has a white finish with color accents in red, in both main elements such as the swimming pool as well as furnishings.
