Resonating with the scale and placement of neighbouring mobile homes, two untreated douglas fir timber enclosures rest on a cast concrete podium over a drift geology. Shelter unfolds between parallel wall planes to embrace views east over the Irish Sea and west over potato fields

“From Suburb to City” International Summer Academy 2012

Courtesy of Krokodil & D-ARCH Between 22 July – 05 August 2012, the architects group Krokodil ( EM2N , pool, Roger Boltshauser, Frank Zierau, Schweingruber Zulauf) and the Department of Architecture of the ETH Zurich (D-ARCH) will jointly run the International Summer Academy 2012 in Zurich with the title “From Suburb to City”. Well-known architects from Switzerland and other countries will examine the themes of agglomeration/city/landscape using the example of the Zurich metropolitan area.

With this in mind, officials at Orchard School—an elementary and middle school campus in northeastern San Jose—sought to improve their outdated and overcrowded campus library, with the goals of housing their growing book collection, improving student access to technology, and creating a central focus for the school. The completed project resulted in an eye-catching library that enlivens the campus, creating a destination that attracts both students and teachers.

Comprising offices, an automated car park, apartments, retail units, a hotel, spa, restaurant and ‘sky bar’, The Cube was conceived as a building which would never close; crafted to open up routes and views to emerging neighbouring districts and permeable to both the users of the building and the community as a whole. Pivotal to the continued regeneration of the surrounding area,The Cube’s striking appearance has had a dramatic impact on the Birmingham city skyline.
