Rodríguez Harvey House by Nicolás Loi Architects

When Nicolás Loi created this home, he placed the right elements in the right place. The support columns underneath makes the whole structure float in this rural environment. The wrap around deck invites guest to experience the outdoor that can even be seen from the inside due to the — never excessive — use of glass. Dark wood exterior panels nicely contrast with the cherry honey interior, and when the sun sets, the light that comes from the interior makes the whole unit lights up like magical fireplace.

Toolbox in Italy by Caterina Tiazzoldi

Toolbox is a professional office located in Torino, Italy in an industrial space. I love the little cell phone room!

The aim of this design is to create a cohesive design concept that still embraces the diversity of the work group. The designer modulated similar volumes with different materials including cork and rubber. This approach allowed the designer to create a variety of spaces with different levels of function and privacy.

The lobby features 400 undulating cubes, and cute icons were designed and placed next to rooms to indicate that room’s function.

The Emerson Dollhouse by Brinca Dada

NYC-based brinca dada is Doug Rollins and Tim Boyle, who both spent time living in Brazil and fell in love with the beautiful, friendly and fun atmosphere there. That’s why their name is brinca dada (BREEN-kuh DEY-duh), taken from the Brazilian term “brincadeira” which translates to “game or plaything.”

Naturally, their first major product is a dollhouse, but this ain’t your traditional run of the mill dollhouse. Nope. It’s ready for 2010. Not only does it feature working solar panels on the roof, but also has glass corners, a minimalist cut stone fireplace, scored hardwood floors, and recessed lights (LED). Made of wood (birch and others) and acrylic glass, it measures 18”H 22”W 36”L and is built at 1:12 scale. All stain and paints are non-toxic and lead free. Fun for the adult and child alike.

At ICFF, they showed the house full of furniture, which they told me were all prototypes. The furnishings More >

The Pantone Hotel in Belgium

This week is all about commercial architecture and design, or so it seems.

The Pantone Hotel, now open in Brussels, Belgium, lives up to its namesake — it’s a colorful and vivid place to stay. The hotel is centrally located just steps from Avenue Louise, the glamorous shopping and business district. It is part of the Pantone Universe, an ever-expanding line of products inspired by color and design.

Designed by Belgian interior designer Michel Penneman and Belgian architect Olivier Hannaert, each of the hotel’s seven floors are enlightened by different color palettes to complement guests’ emotions with distinctive hues — whether vivid or subdued.

The guest rooms are works of art — white walls and bedding provide a clean, crisp canvas for saturated pops of vibrant color. Adding to the artistry, rooms feature photographic More >

Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas by Frank Gehry

I don’t think I’ve ever said “I want to go to there” about a hospital, so I think this is a first. Check out these great photos courtesy of World Architecture News (WAN) of Frank Gehry’s newest project, the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health. My brain sure is healthy enough to know that this is an incredible building. The building officially opened on Friday.

The building is made up of two wings joined with a courtyard: the dramatic steel wing being the Life Activity Center and the simpler, subtle four-story clinic section where patient rooms and research space is located. The Life Activity Wing looks like someone took a steel building and crumpled it up in their hand like a piece of paper.
