A matrix of spaces is linked by movement through them as storeys merge and spaces relate to each other as they rise and fall in a series of interlocked puzzle-like volumes giving a unique three dimensional framework to each space where plan and section respond to program simultaneously

©Flickr – username: rafael rybczynski A collage of materials amongst the trunks of countless birch trees in the Finnish landscape, the Villa Mairea built by Alvar Aalto in 1939 is a significant dwelling that marks a transition from traditional to modern architecture. Built as a guest house and rural retreat for Harry and Maire Gullichsen, Aalto was given permission to experiment with his thoughts and styles, which becomes clear when studying the strangely cohesive residence. Using a limited achromatic palette of external materials, the perception of a vibrant visceral-like interior is heightened in this integrated clinical teaching, training and research centre in Geelong , Australia.
